Essay Contest For Children of Senior School Age «How The Media Changed My City / Village / Community»
The all-Ukrainian essay contest «How the media changed my city/village/ community» started on December 28th. It is created to remind society about the importance of quality journalism and independent media. The project team invites senior students (grades 9-11) from anywhere in the country to take part and share their stories.
«Despite the fact that today everyone can express their opinion on the Internet, the media is still needed. It helps us not to focus on one point of view, but to obtain alternative thoughts. — says Nataliya Bolibrukh, the project coordinator. — Because young people are often agents of change and people who are willing to change the culture of information consumption in their communities, we decided to give them the opportunity to express themselves and share their own stories about the media that have influenced them or their communities».
To participate, students need to upload their works in Ukrainian on a web platform created specifically for the project. The contest will last until January 31, 2022, after which the jury will select five finalists, who in February will receive certificates for 2000 hryvnias for the purchase of the desired equipment.
The finalists of the contest will be chosen by well-known Ukrainian journalists, including:
- Andrii Liubka (writer, translator);
- Olha Perekhrest (journalist, editor of special projects at “The Ukrainians”);
- Tetiana Teren (journalist, executive director of the Ukrainian PEN);
- Hanna Uliura (critic, literary critic).
Subsequently, the works of the five winners of the project will be sent to the selection of the Competition of professional journalism «Honor of the Profession» and in May, 2022, one of them will receive the award in a special category of the contest.
The project is implemented by NGO "Lviv Media Forum" with the support of The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
