Registration for the event "Ukrainian journalists vs. foreign media: How to establish cooperation" is open
The international network of cross-border journalism n-ost invites journalists to take part in a two-day workshop "Ukrainian journalists vs. foreign media: How to establish cooperation".
When: September 13 and 14. Working languages: Ukrainian, English.
Where: Offline at a hotel complex near Kyiv (the address will be provided to journalists selected for participation; transfer, accommodation and meals will be provided by the organizers). Online participation in the workshop is not possible.
During the workshop, experienced journalists will share their experience of working with Western European and American media. In the format of lectures and practical exercises, they will help you figure out how to
- establish contact with foreign media outlets;
- turn personal pages in social networks into a tool for finding customers for materials;
- how to create journalistic material about Ukraine for Ukrainian and foreign media;
- choose a topic;
- communicate about working conditions, payment and safety;
- work with international news agencies.
The workshop participants will be able to practice pitching a topic and get feedback on their idea from a foreign media editor.
The best participants will have the opportunity to propose up to three of their topics to foreign editors, who are cooperating with the workshop trainers.
Workshop presenters
Anastasia Magazova. Freelance journalist for the German newspaper Die Tageszeitung. She studied at the Schools of Journalism in Munich and Berlin. In 2015—2017, she worked as a correspondent for Deutsche Welle. As a Regional Reporting Fellowship fellow, she spent a year reporting for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
She is the co-author of the collection of reports "Unrecognized Stories" (2021) about life in the unrecognized territories of the post-Soviet space and the diary of the first year of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine "Krieg und Frieden" (2022). She holds a master's degree in political science from the Free University of Berlin.
Azad Safarov. Producer for the British TV channel Sky News in Ukraine. Previously, he worked with Ukrainian media, including as a journalist for Channel 5. Later he worked with Radio Liberty, CNN, Euronews and Sky News as a freelance journalist and producer. For five years, he worked for Deutsche Welle.
He contributed to the creation of the Oscar-nominated documentaries The Distant Barking of Dogs (2017) and House of Splinters (2022). In 2023, together with the Sky News team, he received an Emmy Award for his coverage of events in Ukraine.
Invited experts of the workshop
Inna Varenytsia. Inna is a multimedia journalist, freelancer who works with well-known world media and news agencies, including AP and Reuters. She has been traveling to war zones for more than ten years. In addition to Russia's war against Ukraine, Inna worked in Moldova, writing about Transnistria, and filming the battles for the liberation of Mosul in Iraq in 2017.
Alicia Alamiyos. She is the international news editor of the influential Spanish online media outlet El Confidencial. Alicia has been working as a journalist since the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine, and previously covered the conflicts in Egypt, Iraq, Kenya and Somalia, as well as lived and worked in Latin America.
The organizers encourage journalists who:
- Have a journalism degree and/or at least 1 year of media experience;
- Start or plan to start cooperation with a foreign media outlet;
- Have developed skills in establishing contacts;
- Ability to work under stressful conditions;
- Have a good command of spoken and written English (B2 level and above);
- Reside in Ukraine (for participants who do not live in Kyiv, the organizers will cover travel and accommodation costs).
