Resistance in Practice: Lessons from Ukraine and Taiwan
On March 25 at 5:00 PM, we invite everyone to join us at the Lviv Media Hub for a conversation on Taiwanese and Ukrainian best practices of resistance. This event is a joint initiative by the Lviv Media Forum and INDEX: Institute for Documentation and Exchange.
What does resistance look like when authoritarian pressure targets not only territory, but truth? Bringing together perspectives from Ukraine and Taiwan, this discussion looks at how societies under constant threat use journalism as civic defense and harness the energy of communities — the shared presence and interactions in public spaces that can inspire political action, and what we can learn from each other in the process.
Jason Liu is a Taiwanese journalist, podcaster, and nonfiction writer covering war, disinformation, and democratic resilience, participant of the Scholars in Residence program supported by ERSTE Foundation at INDEX: the Institute for Documentation and Exchange. He joins Yevhen Shybalov — a former Donetsk-based correspondent for Dzerkalo Tyzhnia, Fellow of the pilot Veteran Program at INDEX, humanitarian expert, and veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian war, along with Natalia Romanyshyn, a researcher and journalist at Texty.org.ua. Together, they will discuss frontline experiences and responses to disinformation crises.
They will discuss concrete practices: documenting and countering coordinated propaganda to maintain credibility under attack, and leveraging media innovations — from verification tools to audience-centered reporting — to strengthen these efforts.
Moderated by Sasha Dovzhyk, Head of the INDEX: Institute for Documentation and Exchange, the conversation will highlight how journalistic practices, media innovations, and the mobilization of community energy together create meaningful resistance against authoritarian narratives.
