Generations in Journalism: A Wine Talk About Experience, Values, and Cringe

On November 21 at 6:00 PM, we invite everyone to Lviv Media Hub for an open conversation about intergenerational interaction in Ukrainian journalism. The event is a joint initiative of the Lviv Media Forum and NGL.media teams.

Journalism often brings together people who built their careers in the analog era and those who seem to have been born with a smartphone in hand. Words like “censorship”, “temnyk” (a government-issued directive to journalists and media outlets aimed at altering their editorial policy and, in turn, shaping the audience’s perception of certain public events), “administrative resources”, “oligarchs” sound like history to some, while for others, they are vivid memories. We see the world differently, respond differently to challenges, victories, and failures, and — as memes suggest — we both burn out and burn for our work.

How have we changed over the decades? What do we share, and what can we learn from each other?

We’ll discuss the dreams and motivations that brought people into journalism thirty years ago and today; how media consumption has shaped journalism and journalists (from newspapers to social media); the powerful and influential media projects of the 1990s — do they have modern equivalents? — as well as ethical red lines across generations, hierarchy, authority, and professional status; books versus ChatGPT; what helps and what hinders collaboration; and everything else that unites or divides us.

  • Oleksandra Hubytska, Co-founder of NGL.media
