II Lviv Media Forum started on “Arena Lviv” today and will run on 13-14th of May. The event gathered more than 500 journalists. This year topic is “War. Politics. Corruption. Media: a player or a tool?”. Speakers came to the From from 7 countries: Ukraine, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Belorussia, USA, Russia.
“I’m very glad that so many people came to the Forum today. We promised last year that this Forum will become an annual event. Although we were changing the dates of the Forum for three times this year, we eventually understood that it should occur. These things that we can see in Ukraine today are demanding attention. That’s why the topic of this year Forum consists of three main words: corruption, war and politics. I hope that we will find the answers for these important questions during the Media Forum” – noted the Head of NGO “Lviv Media Forum” Ostap Protsyk during the opening of the Forum.
Masters Program Director in UCU – Igor Balynsky thinks that the topic of this year Forum was difficult but it’s very important that Media Forum takes place exactly today because media are more or less responsible for the events in the country.
Partners of the Forum also thanked organizers: International Renaissance Foundation, Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine, Embassy of the United States and “MYMEDIA”.
“We want to thank organizers for making the titanic work because we all know that it’s a biggest media event in Ukraine. We are happy to be the partners of the Forum for the second time already. And this year, thanks to our assistance, the investigative journalism section will be held. Sometimes such journalists are the most effective tool to fight corruption and end the delinquency. We hope that the new ukrainian authorities will finally consider the huge work of the investigative journalists”, – said Stanislav Lyachynski the Head of Strategic Communications and Public Relations in the International Renaissance Foundation.
Lviv city Mayor – Andriy Sadovyi thanked participants and speakers of the Forum for coming to Lviv and wished them a fruitful work: ”We see a lack of responsibility – not only from officials and politicians, but also from media representatives. Media are very often the elements of the transnational companies and justice is not always a dominant in their work. Honor and nobility should be words with sense and journalists should have courage to take the responsibility”.
The discussions that will take place during the first day of the Forum (13 th November) are “Price of the lost opportunities: what will happen in case media will not become independent and professional?”; “Who will break Putin’s informational wall?”; “Journalists in politics – in the midst of strangers?”, etc.
The second day will be dedicated for discussions about ethics in journalism: “Media against corruption: who will win?” and about ukrainian situation in the international media.
